Broken String
If one of your strings breaks, you can replace it yourself with another string. This is done by placing the ball/loop end of the string on the fine tuner mechanism and the other end in the hole through the peg. To tighten the string, turn the peg away from the bridge. Make sure the string rests in the grooves on the bridge and the nut. Only tighten the string until it is in tune. This should only be done if you are comfortable using the pegs. If you are not comfortable doing this, bring it to me with a new string and I will put a new one on.
-
Collapsed Bridge
This can happen when all the strings of your instrument become loose. It is best to bring it to me to fix. It can be difficult to realign the bridge in the correct way.
-
Broken Bridge
If the bridge breaks there is no fixing it. It needs to be taken into a violin shop to get a new bridge.
-
Fallen Soundpost
It is difficult to identify when this happens. If you hear something rattling around inside your instrument it could mean that your sound post is no longer supported between both faces of your instrument. If this happens, do not play on it and take your instrument into a shop to be fixed as soon as possible.
-
Chin Rest Falls Off
This happens when the screws holding the chin rest in place become too loose. It can be fixed by using a paper clip to tighten the screws.
-
Tailpiece Gut Breaks
If all of a sudden your tail piece is not on your instrument anymore, the tail gut has broken. This can be fixed by taking it into the shop to be replaced.
-
Bow Screw Falls Out
If you loosen your bow too much the screw can fall out of the end of the bow and the frog comes off the bow. To fix this, place the frog back on the stick and place the screw back in the whole. Turn the screw to the right until it is secure.
-
Broken Bow Tip
Sometimes, if you swing your bow around too much, the tip can break off. This needs to be fixed at a violin shop.
-
Bow Face Plate Falls Off
The face plate is the white part on the tip of the bow. If this falls off, the hair of the bow can fall off. Do not play with it until you take it into a shop to be repaired.
-
A Few Bow Hairs Fall Out
This is very common and occurs with normal use of the bow. To remove loose hairs gently pull the hair as close as possible to either end of the bow until the hair comes off.
-
All The Bow Hairs Fall Out
This can occur for a variety of reasons. Take it to the shop to get it re-haired.
